Health and Wellness in the Workplace
Health and Wellness in the Workplace
There are numerous studies that show that promoting health and wellness in the workplace benefits both; the employees and the organization.
Among Canadian workers 60% spend their entire workday seated, and 56% are classified as “physically inactive”, 36% are overweight, and 23% are obese, 66% report high stress on their jobs and 21% are daily or regular smokers.
That is a picture that surely reflects your company’s workforce and heavily impacts on your company’s healthcare spending. Health Coaches can surely help with that.
Programs that emphasize the benefits of corporate wellness can be implemented in a variety of ways. However, they all share a common goal – to promote the well-being of their employees, employers and organization in general.
One of the primary benefits of corporate wellness program or intervention involves a reduction in the rates of illness and injuries among employees and employers. Unhealthy individuals are susceptible to developing complications such as diabetes, hypertension or a stroke that if not prevented would also increase medication usage and hospitalization time.
In addition to preventing illnesses amongst employees, corporate wellness programs also lead to a reduction in employee absenteeism. Employees who are stressed, unhealthy or overworked tend to become sick much more often than healthy employees.
When programs that focus on the benefits of corporate wellness are implemented, this rate can be drastically reduced. For example, Coors Brewing Company experienced a remarkable 18% decrease in employee absenteeism after implementing a corporate wellness program within their workplace.
Furthermore, according to Canadian consulting firm, WorkingWell, an average ROI for an employee wellness program is $3.40 for every $1 spent.(**)
